I was born and raised in Minneapolis and I have never felt more proud or more humbled to be a part of this community—and to call this city, and its people, my home and my family—than I do now. My city is coming together to both take a stand against systemic racism and take care of one another. As a white person, I will never be able to fully understand the pain and trauma that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) continue to endure not only in Minneapolis but throughout the United States due to the systems of racism and inequality that are woven into our society. Since the murder of George Floyd, I’ve sat heartbroken and in deep reflection, hearing my community address what action is needed to create lasting change, what I can do to help dismantle racism in my own community, and how to recognize my own privilege and unconscious biases.

Louie Tran_Black Lives Matter_The Mars GenerationI know that The Mars Generation has supporters, participants, and advocates in neighborhoods and communities across the country and world that are facing this same crisis, and the larger crisis of long-standing systems of inequality. Under the weight of this pain and uncertainty, I know that we all hope for a more equitable and just future. I want to thank you all for being a part of our community as we labor to do this work. The Mars Generation’s mission is to empower young people. We have created a space for youth to explore possibilities, dream of a better future, engage in dialogue, and become inspired to be the catalyst for change in their communities.

Repairing unjust systems and institutions is not a momentary act. There is a long road ahead and much work to be done. As we work to rebuild Minneapolis and continue to march towards justice and equality, I urge each of you to think about what you can do to help create change in your own community. No matter where you are or who you are, there is space for you to participate in making the future better. I, and The Mars Generation, feel renewed in our commitment to empower and support young people in becoming catalysts for a more equitable and just future.
